Just in case you’ve gotten tired of hearing about Neck Deep’s most recent album, here’s another solid pop-punk band that’s flying under the radar for now. They check all the pop-punk boxes: they’ve got an EP called “Misguided Youth,” and that EP cover pictures a cartoonized image of a kid holding a skateboard. The differences between the vast array of pop-punk bands out there are often subtle, but Highlives are worth taking note of. Their particular brand of pop-punk is slower than the likes of State Champs, allowing you to take a breath in between observations on the futility of life. The gentler pace also has the effect of making the songs feel more reflective, as steady instrumentals provide a stolid backdrop for the earnest vocals and nostalgic lyrics. This is not Neck Deep 2.0, but rather a pop-inspired and thought-out take on the classic pop-punk formula.

Interview: Milestones

Formed by vocalist Matt Clarke, guitarist Drew Procter, bassist Mark Threlfall, and drummer Andy Makin in 2014, Milestones soon completed their roster with guitarist Eden Leviston. The band signed to Fearless Records in 2016 and released their debut EP “Equal Measures” the same year. The EP sets the bar high, showcasing the band’s twist on pop-punk, which brings alt-rock and early-2000s emo elements into the mix for an emotional and high-energy ride. “Equal Measures” is filled to the brim with infectious melodies, chunky and fast-paced pop-punk rhythms, self-reflective lyrics, and stirring vocals. Milestones will be on tour with The Gospel Youth in the UK this September, with tickets available here.

Interview:

If you could describe the band in one word, what would it be?

Sexy… Okay, seriously, probably “hustlers”. We work hard and we pride ourselves on that being a big part of our make up to our fans, friends and of course, ourselves.

What do you think is the perfect environment for listening to your music?

Personally, it would be on a train or on a bus. I loved watching things go past so quick but not having to take it all in, it allows me to mindlessly think.

If your music was the soundtrack to a TV show, what do you think it would be?

Probably One Tree Hill because something horrific and amazing happens in Every. Single. Fucking. Episode.

Your music is deeply personal. Do you ever find inspiration outside your own life?

Totally. I’m so inspired by the kindness and bravery I see in those closest to me and also those who scratch the surface of my life and yet offer so much. Our journey so far has been amazing and the people who have helped us, including our fans, remain a huge inspiration as to how/why I get through the darker days.

You’re about to go on your first co-headlining tour this fall. How are you feeling about that?

It’s definitely nerve-wracking. We’ve never done any “big” sized rooms in the UK, it’s always been in the US, Canada or Europe. Despite being a UK band, we probably would do better headlining the US/Europe if travel made it easier, which is very abnormal for a U.K. band. I think given we only have 5 songs released, being ABLE to headline these shows is something that gives us a lot of pride.

Your music is very emotional and personal. Does that make it a cathartic experience to play live?

I feel our performance, our “show”, given the fact we have 0 budget whatsoever, is the best part about Milestones. We have a range of moments in our live set which allows people to really go through the motions of milestones. We have the intimate, the sad, the happy, the uplifting, the inspiring, the powerful, the exciting, the jumpy, the dark etc, we want our fans to be able to say “oh, THAT song” just by how it made them feel during the set.. it’s important to not make people feel only 1 emotion to your music because music should inspire happiness and excitement as much as it may represent a sad/darker feeling we all experience at times.

What’s your favorite song to perform live, and can fans expect to see that on your fall tour?

We’re going to be playing every song off Equal Measures + 3 new songs. One of which is just a “live” song and 2 are actually going to be on our debut album that will be coming out next year. I’d hate to say my favourite because it differs so much, but generally I would say Shot In The Dark or Hindsight!
