Interview: Wanderer

On Wanderer’s newest EP “C I T Y”, it’s evident that he has been playing music for a while. The sparse rhythms in the background are executed with precision and care, and the soft vocals saunter through subtle harmonies with ease. Indie-driven lyrics and riffs, coupled with electronic pop elements, give the music a wonderfully nostalgic feeling, serene and inspiring.

How did you get into playing music?

I’ve been playing guitar in bands and writing songs for over ten years now. A few years back I started singing a lot more and considering the idea of a solo project!

What artists have been the biggest influences on you?

There’s so many that have shaped who I am musically. From growing up listening to The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, to today where artists like The 1975, John Mayer, and The Weeknd inspire me.

What would your dream collab be?

I would love to play with The Rolling Stones, or John Mayer!

Which comes first for you, lyrics or music?

It’s never a set formula. Sometimes the music will come first in a guitar riff or recording session, other times a lyric or title will start the song for me.

If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?

Cinematic pop music with indie and electronic influences.

What kind of music scene is there where you’re from in Arizona, and does that have an effect on your music?

There’s a lot of great bands that have come out here, and a cool local scene I’ve come to know. It’s definitely inspiring to see others doing it alongside you, and is nice when others support what you do!

You release your music under the name Wanderer. Do you feel that being a ‘wanderer’ has defined you or your music?

Absolutely. The name just felt right to create the project under. That way it can become bigger than just one person. I think a lot of people in this generation are wandering – figuring out who they are, what they like, what they want to do.

What are your plans for the near future?

Releasing a lot more music this year, touring soon, and writing!

Where do you hope to be in five years?

I hope to be doing what I am now, just on a bigger scale. Making records, touring the world, connecting with as many people as possible. xo
